SMCS Hosts Inaugural Talk on ‘The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Building Safe Cities’

February 21, 2025: IBA-SMCS organized an inaugural talk titled ‘The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Building Safe Cities’ by Dr. Muhammad Atif Tahir, Professor IBA-SMS at Main Campus.

Dean IBA-SMCS, Dr. Shakeel Khoja, commenced the session with a welcome note highlighting the importance of research talks in fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and students and the need for regular discussions on the latest advancements in computer science.

The event attracted a diverse audience, including faculty members, students, and industry representatives from IBA, FAST-NUCES Karachi, Karachi University, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Bahria University Karachi Campus, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, DigitalOcean, EMC Engineering, Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology (KIET), as well as IBA faculty and other notable guests.

Dr. Tahir began his talk by sharing insights from his Postdoctoral research at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of the West of England, UK, and the Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing (CVSPP) at Surrey University, UK. He then delved into his contributions to video analytics, covering topics such as Anomaly Detection, Person Re-identification, Face Recognition, and Theft Car Surveillance.

The session concluded with an engaging discussion on the challenges and opportunities in building ‘Karachi as a Safe City’ using AI technologies. The talk gave attendees valuable insights into AI's transformative potential in urban safety.
