SMCS IBA and ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon explore collaborative research opportunities in IoT and Sustainable Technologies

August 27, 2024: Department of Computer Science (DCS), School of Mathematics & Computer Science (SMCS), IBA Karachi hosted an insightful focus group on the Internet of Things (IoT) and climate change, featuring Dr. Rui Marinheiro, Director, Department of Telecommunications and Computer Engineering, ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon.

Faculty members and PhD students from SMCS attended the session, including Assistant Professor and Head, Telecommunications Research Lab (TRL), Dr. Faisal Iradat; Assistant Professor, Waseem Arain; and PhD Scholars Asma Touqir, Muhammad Zain Uddin, and Adil Tanveer. They explored a wide range of collaborative opportunities between the two universities.

The meeting commenced with discussions on potential projects where both institutions could collaborate. Key areas of interest included applying jointly for new research grants, leveraging the GPU and Computer Vision facilities at ISCTE for advanced research, and establishing connections with other departments within ISCTE for interdisciplinary research in fields such as Software Defined Networking (SDN), Data Science, and Climate Change.

Dr. Iradat shared an overview of ongoing projects that have been submitted for research grants. The discussion covered the publication requirements and the PhD admission and scholarship opportunities available at ISCTE. Mr. Arain inquired about the structure of the PhD program at ISCTE, seeking to understand the academic requirements and expectations.

Additionally, Mr. Zain Uddin presented his research proposal on the application of sensing technologies for automated machine maintenance, sparking interest in potential collaborative work. Ms. Touqir engaged in discussions about her research on fuzzing in IoT, receiving valuable feedback and insights from Dr. Marinheiro.

The discussion also explored future research initiatives, with a particular focus on sustainability, climate change, and green developments, highlighting the commitment of both institutions to tackle global challenges through innovative research.

The team thanked Dr. Shakeel Khoja, Dean SMCS, and Dr. Shahid Hussain, Chairperson DCS-SMCS IBA, for their invaluable support in facilitating this significant collaboration.

The meeting concluded with several concrete plans for collaboration outlined, paving the way for a strong partnership between IBA and ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon.
